프로젝트 소개

Yeosu Supercritical CO2 Industralization Support Center
To help companies in the Yeosu Industrial Complex successfully meet the government’s greenhouse gas reduction targets, we are establishing a Support Center for the Industrialization of Supercritical CO₂ Power. The center will provide solutions on expected GHG reduction and power generation efficiency when applying SCO₂ power cycles to industrial processes, enabling companies to build effective decarbonization strategies. The Support Center for Power Industrialization is composed of KEPCO’s SCO₂ Demonstration Center and an Operation Support Center that helps local companies commercialize their technologies.
*The center is scheduled for completion in 2025.
프로젝트 목표
Key goals & objectives
Objectives of project
Construction of a Supercritical CO₂ Power Demonstration Facility
The core of supercritical CO₂ power generation lies in designing efficient cycles and building reliable systems. This project conducts thermodynamic analysis and simulations to determine optimal operating conditions, establishing a 2 MW-scale cycle and concept design. This foundation represents a critical first step toward practical application in industrial complexes and future commercialization.
Cycle Design and Analysis & System Concept Development
To validate the results of design and analysis, we are constructing a 2 MW supercritical CO₂ power demonstration facility. This center will serve as a testbed that companies in the Yeosu and Gwangyang industrial complexes can directly utilize. Furthermore, it will act as a key hub to accelerate decarbonization in regional industries and contribute to national carbon neutrality strategies.
Development of Control System and Simulator
To ensure efficient and safe operation of the power system, we are developing a dedicated control system supported by a digital simulator. The simulator provides a virtual environment to test various operating conditions, minimizing risks that may occur during actual plant operation. Through this approach, we can secure stable demonstration performance while also reducing risks associated with future scale-up.
Operational Data Analysis
and Optimization
Operational data collected from the demonstration center will be analyzed to identify optimization strategies that improve power generation efficiency and operational stability. Data-driven insights play a key role not only in enhancing short-term performance but also in ensuring long-term operational reliability. This approach enhances the competitiveness and applicability of optimized solutions.
Development of Performance Evaluation Standards and Operating Procedures
We will systematically establish performance evaluation standards and operating procedures. These standards not only ensure the reliability of the technology but also provide a foundation of guidelines applicable to future large-scale commercialization. Ultimately, we aim to deliver an optimized operating manual that balances safety and cost-effectiveness, offering practical value that can be directly applied in industry.
Establishment of a Technology Cooperation Framework through the Support Center
We will establish an operation support center in closely with companies in the Yeosu and Gwangyang industrial complexes. The center will serve as a hub for sharing demonstration data, providing technical support, and facilitating joint research, thereby strengthening industry-academia-research cooperation. Through this platform, companies can effectively advance their decarbonization strategies.

Our technologies
Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) identified supercritical CO₂ power generation as a next-generation strategic technology in 2014 and has since pursued dedicated R&D programs. The company has successfully manufactured and tested key components of a 2 MW-class SCO₂ power system, securing valuable operational data. In addition, KEPCO obtained regulatory approval from the Korea Gas Safety Corporation and received AIP certification, meeting international standards. While government research institutes mainly focus on lab-scale core technology development, KEPCO is leading the way in scaling up to MW-class, commercial-level demonstration.

Yeosu Future Innovation District
The Yeosu Future Innovation District is uniquely positioned between Korea’s largest petrochemical base in Yeosu and the steel and cement hub in Gwangyang. This location provides optimal access to waste heat and by-products, creating ideal conditions for applying supercritical CO₂ power generation and resource-recycling technologies. Serving as a decarbonization hub directly linked to both complexes, the district enhances energy efficiency and supports faster achievement of carbon neutrality. By combining research, demonstration, and industrial deployment in one site, it is set to become a strategic center for Korea’s energy transition.
